“HEIRLOOM QUALITY” TURKEY CALLS

Wood

As you can see, we offer Strikers, Pot Calls, and Box Calls made from approximately 50 different woods. While every wood species is different there are ways to identify which woods are likely to produce the desires sounds. Every wood has a Specific Gravity, a Janka Hardness rating, and an Average Dry Weight. It is important to note that these are average numbers for the species and there can be substantial variance in the actual numbers for a specific piece of wood. That is not to say if two woods had the exact same numbers in all three categories that they would sound exactly the same, they wouldn’t. By the same token, woods that have dissimilar numbers may have sounds approximately the same sound.

All of that being said, after a while you can notice combinations of numbers that are likely to work on certain surfaces and to produce a desired sound on that surface. Our exotic species come from all over the world. Most of our Domestic species are cut by us and air dried under climate controlled conditions for as much as two years before use. Below is a table of the Janka Hardness rating of most of the woods we use as well a compilation of what Derrick calls “Wood Species Specifics” for most of the woods we use.
